NCCSIA Announces 2017 Men's Basketball College Division All-State Teams

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) has announced the 10 members of the 2017 College Division All-State Men's Basketball Team. Nine different North Carolina institutions were recognized on this year's teams.

Pfeiffer University led the way with two selections, while Guilford College, Johnson & Wales Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, Methodist University, UNC Pembroke, Queens University of Charlotte, Saint Augustine's University, and Winston-Salem State University all placed a student-athlete on one of the two all-state teams.

Seniors A.J. Clark and Andrew Guerrero led the way as the lone teammates to be selected NCCSIA All-State with both earning first-team honors. The Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Player of the Year, Clark helped lead the Falcons to a 26-5 record and a berth in the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Tournament. The Burlington, N.C. native averaged 21.1 points, 2.6 boards, 4.0 assists, and 1.4 steals per contest. Clark scored in double-figures in all but three of the Falcons' 31 games, including four 30-point outings. For his efforts, Clark also earned third-team All-America honors by Basketball Times and honorable mention All-America honors by Bulletin News.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Guerrero joined Clark in leading Pfeiffer to its first NCAA DII Tournament berth since 2004-05. Guerrero averaged 18.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 91.4% from the free throw line, a new single-season program record. Guerrero drained 108 three-pointers in his senior campaign, including a six-game stretch that Guerrero hit 37 threes.

Johnson & Wales Charlotte senior Rickey Porter earned first-team all-state honors after averaging 21.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. The 2017 USCAA First-Team All-American scored 20 or more points on 19 occasions and finished his career as the Wildcats' all-time leading scorer with 1,660 points.

One of two juniors to earn first-team honors, UNC Pembroke's Nigel Grant led the Braves to a 24-8 record in 2016-17 and the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. A native of The Bronx, New York, Grant averaged 14.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while being honored as All-Peach Belt Conference. Grant scored in double figures in all but three contests, while reaching the 20-point plateau in six games.

Saint Augustine's University junior Quincy January wraps up the all-state first team. The Atlanta, Georgia native averaged a double-double on the season with 16.8 points and 10.3 rebounds, while adding 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.6 blocks per contest. The 2017 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, January ranked ninth in DII in double-doubles and second in the nation in free throw attempts with 245.

Picking up NCCSIA second-team honors were Guilford's Carson Long, Johnson C. Smith's Robert Davis, Methodist's Davion Ayabarreno, Queens' Todd Withers, and Winston-Salem State's Robert Colon.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.

Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.

NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, softball, and baseball.
