NCCSIA Announces 2015-16 University Division All-State Women's Basketball Team

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2015-16 University Division All-State Women’s Basketball Teams on Wednesday. A total of 10 student-athletes from seven different North Carolina schools were named to the first and second teams.

Gardner-Webb was one of three schools with a pair of selections as Olivia Parker and Candace Brown earned first team recognition. UNC Asheville had a player named to the first and second teams while Charlotte received a pair of second team distinctions.

Parker and Brown were joined on the first team by sophomore guard Shay Burnett of Elon, junior guard Chatori Major of UNC Asheville and senior guard Lucy Mason of UNCG.

While leading the Bulldogs to a 19-12 record, Brown earned a spot on the All-Big South Conference First Team and finished second in the league’s Player of the Year voting after averaging 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. A starter in all 31 games, the Hinton, W.Va., product shot 75.4 percent from the free throw line and played 35.6 minutes per contest.

A first team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, Burnett led Elon and ranked 10th in the CAA with a 12.9 scoring average while starting 27 of 30 games. She ranked fourth in the CAA by making 80.6 percent of her free throw attempts while ranking 10th in the league with 106 assists. The Graham, N.C., native scored in double figures 24 times, including a pair of 20-point performances.

The leading scorer for UNC Asheville, Major was named as the Big South Conference’s Player of the Year after scoring 13.7 points per game while starting all 33 contests. The Camp Lejeune, N.C., native scored in double figures 23 times while leading UNC Asheville to the Big South regular season and tournament titles. She also led the Bulldogs in eight different statistical categories.

Named to the NCCSIA All-State First Team for the second year in a row, Mason earned First Team All-Southern Conference notice by the league’s coaches and media in addition to being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ® First Team. A starter in all 30 games for the Spartans, the Stone Mountain, Ga., product averaged 22.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest and finished her career as UNCG’s all-time leading scorer with 1,907 career points.

A first team All-Big South selection for Gardner-Webb, Parker started 28 of 29 games during her senior season. She was tied for third in the Big South with a 13.7 scoring average while ranking second in the league by grabbing 9.7 rebounds per contest. The Charlotte, N.C., product finished her career as the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 1,230 points.

The NCCSIA All-State Second Team consisted of senior forward Alexis Alexander and junior guard Lefty Webster of Charlotte, senior guard Shatia Cole of UNCW, senior center Aprill McRae of North Carolina A&T and junior guard Tianna Knuckles of UNC Asheville.

Nominations were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by NCCSIA members.

Founded in 2002, the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.

NCCSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
